Description : OctoCell combines additive, FM and subtractive synthesis in an accessible interface. Stack up to eight oscillators, each with their own individual FM parameters, and take advantage of the many modulation and envelope options to create rich, evolving sounds.
A new kind of synthesis– OctoCell was designed with the instability of acoustic instruments in mind. By giving each of the eight oscillators their own waveform and frequency modulation, the resulting harmonic interaction results in a rich, complex sound. But while the potential is huge for passionate sound engineers, the initial interface is simple enough for beginners to experiment too. Even just changing the OSC and FM Harmonicity settings and turning on Random can generate exciting, dynamic new tones.
Masterfully crafted– OctoCell was created by Michel Geiss and Jean Lochar. Geiss is a longtime collaborator and technician at Jean-Michel Jarre’s studio, and Lochard is a seasoned Max for Live programming expert at the prestigious Ircam Institute in Paris. After spending years studying and researching software synthesis, Geiss wanted to take a fresh look at the structure of synthesis. His goal with OctoCell is to inspire musicians and sound engineers to discover new sounds and compositional ideas.
For musicians– OctoCell can be used by any musician looking for a new palette to play with. The interface follows a logical structure from oscillators to global envelopes, filters and signal output, with easily customizable controls for fast, reproducible results. Geiss and Lochard built the device with MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) in mind, which means parameters in the device can be assigned to compatible keyboards and controllers or drawn using Live 11 Note Expression View for more natural and expressive performance. OctoCell also has an impressive bank of presets created by experienced sound engineers and artists.
For designers– Opening the edit page reveals the complexity of OctoCell’s unique design. In addition to separate envelopes for the additive and FM sections of each oscillator, there is a modulation matrix, built-in effects, a full-featured sequencer, a step modulator, and the ability to adjust the additive and FM ratio parameters for each oscillator. With all these controls, you can experiment with special tones, ranging from simple single-oscillator modulation to more complex, CPU-intensive configurations.
