Those familiar with Soundiron know that when recording any instrument, we always try our best to capture it in all its glory. And being the weird guys we are, we always experiment a little to see if we can find some hidden magic. So we decided to travel a bit, creating the Alpha Organ library , which features two separate, full-size, century-old organs built into St. Paul’s Catholic Church in San Francisco. Taking advantage of this rare opportunity, we decided to try and extract something a little more unusual from an old microphone cabinet to capture something new in our favorite hall: a stereo pair of high-quality hydrophones. We called our unusual result Aquae Organ .
We recorded three different combinations of registers with the Alpha and Omega organs in unison, each meant to highlight different aspects and a special tonal quality of this phenomenon. Based on the original recordings, we used all our various techniques and secrets of sound design to develop, transform and warp the sounds of our journey into different pads, atmospheres, synth leads and ambient landscapes, from lush and harmonious to fragile and dissonant, to further unleash the creative potential of this virtual instrument. We included 12 wavetables, as well as basic synth sustains and staccato in various forms, to transform the sounds and open up new spaces of musical possibilities.
