Description: Perhaps one of the most mysterious musical instruments of all time, the Ondes Martenot or Martenot Waves were designed by Maurice Martenot in 1928. The original, unreliable tube design was refined, and later models remained in production until 1988. An interesting overview of the tools can be found on Youtube.
Martineau’s waves have been used in numerous film scores since 1931; One by Shostakovich, Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Ghostbusters (1984), A Passage to India (1984), to contemporary films Amelie (2001) and There Will Be Blood (2007) by composer Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.
Thomas Bloch is perhaps the most famous musician playing this instrument in the whole world; When great musicians and producers are inspired by the sound of the Waves of Martenot, they often turn to it. Radiohead, Tom Waits and Damon Albarn have all worked with him.
So we knew Thomas was the only person who could help us recreate this mesmerizing instrument…
The instrument generates sound using oscillators like a conventional analog synthesizer, but with its unusual control methods that give the instrument its unique character. The most famous is the metal ring worn on the finger of the right hand. The ring is not used when playing on the keyboard, just like the ribbon controllers we are used to.
When the Ondes is switched to “ring mode”, the ring becomes the only means of determining the pitch, a very clever technique, in particular if you want to reproduce any sound at all, you must simultaneously operate a transparent, diamond-shaped device known as touche d’intensité. ..
Touche d’intensité is a large button in the instrument’s drawer that produces the instrument’s tone by pressing and tapping, essentially controlling the instrument’s volume envelope. Touche d’intensité is controlled by the left hand, while the musician uses the ring or keyboard to produce the melody.
Next to the touche d’intensité are several switches and dials that control the oscillators and create the timbre of the notes – as well as send signals to three speakers…
